Carbine 1

We will hold the Carbine 1 course on Sunday April 25th from 8 AM to 4 PM on the outdoor range.

The Basic Carbine Course is a One Day, Low to Moderate Intensity class with the emphasis on the basics of marksmanship and manipulation. This class will include:

  • Nomenclature
  • Disassembly / Assembly
  • Proper Lubrication
  • Zeroing optics and iron sights
  • Maintenance
  • Magazine selection
  • Sight types, optics
  • Slings
  • Ammunition
    Practical application will include Weapons Safety; Sight Alignment / Sight Picture; Mounting the Carbine, Trigger Control; Loading / Unloading / Reloading; Malfunction clearance, Position shooting - Standing, Prone. Particular emphasis will be placed at understanding ballistics including mechanical offset.

    All firing will be done from static lines into the backstop. There will be no shooting and movement. Drills with multiple repetitions at varying distances from 5-50 yards on carbine mounts and 1-shot, 2-shot and 3-shot drills, with reloads/malfunction clearances as needed.

    Please bring the following:

  • A good attitude
  • Serviceable 5.56x45mm Carbine. An AR type is STRONGLY recommended
  • A serviceable sling. A tactical sling is best, but you must have a sling
  • Red Dot or other optic is optional, but recommended. Backup iron sight also recommended if you are using any red dot or other optic
  • Three serviceable magazines
  • The ability to carry two magazines on your body
  • Eyepro and Earpro
  • Baseball type hat
  • Clothing and footwear appropriate for the season
  • Kneepads , elbow pads and shooting gloves are optional, but recommended
  • Water / electrolyte replacement and food
    At the end of this class you will have a good understanding of the functioning of the weapon, and how to safely and effectively employ it.

    Cost is $35. Class size will be limited. Class will be held no matter the weather.

    Carbine 2

    We are going to hold a Carbine 2 class on Sunday January 31.
    This class is limited to LPRGC Club members who participated in one of the Carbine 1 classes in 2008 or 2009.
    Fee for this class is $35.
    Capacity is limited to 16 students. The preliminary registration list is below. Please indicate your interest by responding to this message. I'll set up a waiting list if we have more than 16 interested.
    This class will be held rain, snow or shine - see link for example in snow from last weekend.

    Please arrive for setup at 8:30 am, class begins at 9:30 AM sharp. We hope to wrap up right around 4pm. We will meet at the outdoor range. We have a very full day so please be on time. We will supply all targets and stands.

    Please bring the following:

  • A good attitude
  • Serviceable 5.56x45mm Carbine. An AR type is STRONGLY recommended.
  • Optics are desirable but not necessary
  • You may also bring other types of Military Carbines such as AK's or M-1 Carbine
  • A pistol/revolver Strong side belt or thigh holster ONLY
  • 400 rounds of serviceable rifle ammunition. M855 is approved for this class as we are not shooting steel. No tracers.
  • 50 rounds of serviceable pistol ammunition
  • Empty Chamber Flags are NOT required for this course
  • Mat or blanket to lay on for sighters (we're doing these first)
  • 3 to 5 dummy rounds appropriate to your rifle; we will have .223/5.56 ONLY available to lend
  • A serviceable sling. A tactical sling is best, but you must have a sling, THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS - I have a couple GI slings - let me know if you need one.
  • Minimum three serviceable rifle magazines and 2 serviceable pistol, 30 round preferable for Rifle, 20's OK. Please mark your mags so they are easily ID as yours.
  • Recommend you bring as many mags as possible to minimize reloading time. Also, a magazine loader such as "Lula" helps save your thumbs.
  • The ability to carry at least two rifle magazines and 2 pistol magazines on your body; mag holders, pouches, vest or coat pockets are OK.
  • Eyepro and Earpro
  • Clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather
  • Kneepads and elbow pads are optional
  • Shooting gloves are optional, but highly recommended
  • Water, electrolyte replacement and food. We will break for lunch but you are on your own for food.
